Low volume Manufacture of Xmas Gift

Additive Manufacture SLS production partWalterbrooke architects create compelling, exciting and fun spaces that engage with senses, operate efficiently and respond positively to the environment.  They pride themselves on using the latest technology to reinforce their significant role in the construction industry.

The relationship between Formero and Walterbrooke started earlier in the year when Walterbrooke applied Rapid Prototyping technologies to model the Adelaide Oval re-development.

Utilising Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) as the most suitable process for their application, Walterbrooke were amazed with the results.  It opened their minds to how they could use Rapid Prototyping/Additive Manufacturing technologies in other applications to create complex architectural forms.

One of the highlights of SLS technology is that the parts can be utilised for end-use applications, allowing designer’s unlimited design freedom.  Endless combinations are available.  Full assemblies can be made, or low volume production quantities of complex structures can be produced to minimise assembly times.

As part of Walterbrooke’s end-of-year Christmas party, they wanted to create a gift which was an architectural interpretation of the complex geometry of a snowflake.  Using the capabilities of SLS technologies, Walterbrooke and Formero created a design of a “cube mesh” with the letters that make up the name “Walterbrooke” free-floating inside.  The idea was that most people, regardless of their knowledge of manufacturing technologies, would immediately recognise “this shouldn’t be possible”.

CAD build for SLS

The parts were built out of unfilled nylon.  In total the SLS machine’s platform was loaded just over 3 times to complete the project.  With each build taking 60 hours to complete.  Chris Murray, Formero’s SLS Technician says, “Parts were removed from the machine and cleaned, no extra processing was needed.  Some underwent our unique colourfast process to add a flare of colour.  All in all, we were able to complete the project and supply parts in less than two weeks, this wouldn’t have been achievable using traditional manufacturing techniques.”

Feedback

“Formero prototyped a highly detailed and precise architectural form.  This allowed us to demonstrate to our clients the intent of the design.  As architects our process is also one of evolution and exploration of ideas.  We collaborated with Formero a second time to create a Christmas gift that is interesting, fun and interactive.”
