Low Volume Production
Time Saver Retrofit Jig
Daniel Lemm runs a small locksmith company in Melbourne – Rapid Locksmiths. Daniel discovered there was a gap in the market for a cost effective product that he and other locksmith’s needed. He managed to turn his idea into a reality, even though he had no product development experience.
Daniel’s Story
My idea started when I had to replace my old wooden jig, I discovered there was only one over priced tool made of stainless steel that was available to retrofit locks. Knowing I could make a better product at a much lower price, I set out to design an improved model.
An engineer drew up my ideas of a plastic model and provided a 3D cad file. This stage went well, but then realized I knew very little about injection moulding or tool making.
At the same time I was spending money with Patent Attorneys, registering the design in Australia and a trading name - Dynamite Tools.
Challenges
The challenges began, after speaking to a recommended Moulder, I was told the design thickness would be pushing the limits of moulding and would also exceed my budget.
The first run of my product was low volume, no one wanted to help me. I contacted Formero, who took the time to really listen to my ideas and what I needed to achieve.
It was like a breath of fresh air being able to talk to people who wanted to help me move forward. Not only could they help me re-design my jig to suit injection moulding, they explained the tool making and moulding problems upfront.
Final Outcome
I am proud to announce that my “RETROFIT JIG” is now available at ‘Locksmiths Supply Company’ stores throughout Australia, NZ and spreading out to builders in the near future.
“For me the sense of achievement far outweighs the time, effort and money I have put on the line to bring this product to the market. I’m sure I wouldn’t have made it without the professional help from the team at Formero. “
Thanks Formero team… Daniel Lemm, Rapid Locksmiths
